ISIS Sugar Mill

SEI-Sustainable-Energy-Infrastructure-Isis.jpg

Location: ISIS Sugar Mill, Childers QLD

Capacity: 25MW

Commissioned: June 2006

Environmental Benefits: Saves more than 97,700 tonnes of CO2 per annum.

The ISIS Central Sugar Mill facility is SEI’s first renewable cogeneration project that produces energy from sugar cane by-product (bagasse).

Operation

Bagasse is combusted to create steam, this steam is then used to drive a turbine that produces clean, renewable electricity. The electricity is either used in the sugar mill or exported to the grid. As the sugar cane cutting is seasonal, the ISIS sugar mill cogeneration facility operates for approximately six months of the year. The 25MW capacity facility operates 24/7 during this season.

Energy

The plant produces approximately 98,500MWh of electricity per annum, which is expected to provide the annual electricity requirements of around 13,900 average households. SEI is committed to significantly contributing to the reduction of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Environmental Benefits

Using Bagasse as fuel to generate electricity means that the facility is displacing electricity normally sourced from fossil fuels. This project saves more than 97,700 tonnes of CO2 per annum. This can be equated into some easily communicated figures such as:

  • Removing more than 12,000 cars from the road for one year; or

  • The equivalent to planting around 364,552 trees.
