Moranbah Power Station
Location: Moranbah Power Station, Moranbah, QLD
Capacity: 12.2 MW
Commissioned: 2004
Environmental Benefits: Saves more than 12,500 tonnes of CO2 per annum.
Moranbah Power Station was constructed to supply power to Arrow Energy to operate their gas compressors.
Operation
The Moranbah Power Station utilises the Coal Seam Methane from the Bowen Basin to provide electricity to Arrow whilst exporting 50% of this amount to the grid. Methane gas, which is 21 times more harmful than Carbon Dioxide, is vented during the coal mining process. The site consists of 8 x 1.5MW gas engine generators. This facility operates 24/7 365 days per year. SEI owns and manages the facility and oversees a third party to deliver its obligations of maintenance and operations.
Energy
The plant produces approximately 96,100 MWh of low emission intensity electricity per annum.
Environmental Benefits
This project significantly reduces the greenhouse gasses that this facility would otherwise release into the atmosphere by burning the methane and producing an energy source. This project saves more than 12,500 tonnes of CO2 per annum.
This can be equated into some easily communicated figures such as:
Removing more than 3,066 cars from the road for one year; or
The equivalent to planting around 46,800 trees.
This is only one of Sustainable Energy Infrastructure’s many sites committed to the reduction of greenhouse gasses from such fuels as sewerage and landfill gas. This includes the generation of green energy from sewerage, landfill and solar fuels.
